What does garbage sound like? That is the question this sound installation project attempts to explore, with field recordings collected from trashcans all around the college campus, both indoors and outdoors. We all throw trash away all the time, but never stop to wonder what the trash can's point of view is. The relationship and interaction between the human and the garbage can is often overlooked. The audience was instructed to stand under and put their head inside a metal garbage can hanging from the ceiling, listening to the field recordings through a speaker installed inside of it. People were able to experience what the trashcan would hear on a day to day basis, from having your trash bag replaced, having crumpled pieces of paper, soda cans, and half eaten food thrown inside of you, to sitting idly by, listening to the ambient noises in the moments when nobody was throwing anything away. Hopefully the listener will walk away from under the garbage can feeling a sense of somewhat connection to this part of the campus infrastrcuture.
